Just when you thought you had seen it all, something wacky like the ‘mufgel’ pops into our lives.
Can you guess what this insane food mash-up is? If a muffin and a bagel had a baby – this is what it would look it! Say hello to The Bagel Store’s latest food hybrid – the mufgel. While it may not sound like the most appetising creation, it certainly tastes amazing stuffed with sweet sweet cream cheese.
A unique take on the classic Parisian treat, the macaronut is indeed half macaron half doughnut. New York baker Francois Payard is the master behind the holey dessert. Forget the cronut and put aside your cruffins, the macaronut is clearly the food of the future.
This is one food mash-up that we’re not mad at. Anything that involves Nutella is ok with us. This scrumptious dish is served in a Brooklyn bakery Robicelli’s, and is cooked using actual pasta. I guess it has to be tasted to be believed.
Some genius finally thought to wed the doughnut and the burrito. Originating at Surfin Donuts, a chain in Southern California, this bumper breakfast comes with all the regular brekkie burrito fixings, plus a sweet, glazed doughnut inside.
We’ve all heard of the Egg McMuffin, but this is something completely different. A San Fransisco cafe Craftsman and Wolves, is offering up this scotch egg inside a savoury muffin. Paleo foodies rejoice.
Ben & Jerry’s Cookie Dough Ice Cream Beer
Not many people can go past a scoop of delicious Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, but would you try their latest creation? Introducing Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough-flavoured beer! The ice cream company has teamed up with New Belgium again, having come out last year with a Salted Caramel Brownie Brown Ale. They claim the wacky beverage was created to promote climate change awareness, of course. So ditch your cones and raise your bottles of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough beer for climate change!
Smith’s KFC Zinger Potato Chips
The famous colonel has partnered with Smith’s Chips to create the ‘Zinger’ flavour. The limited-edition chips are inspired by KFC’s spicy Zinger chicken fillets. They’ll be available from KFC stores around the country from September 8, as well as Coles supermarkets. A different kind of finger-lickin’ good!
What happens when you take a pizza and a quesadillas and combine their delicious awesomeness? You get a pizzadilla. The Italian Mexican mash-up is made by cooking tortillas in a pan and adding your fave pizza toppings to it. The result is a crispy, tasty cheesy delight. You’ll never look at tortillas the same way again.
Those that love pizza and fried chicken – listen up. KFC have delved into pizza territory using one of their famous pieces of deep fired goodness as a ‘base’. They’re calling their hunk of fried chicken covered in pizza toppings ‘Chizza’. Unfortunately the calorific mashup is only for sale at KFC locations in the Philippines, at least for now.
When the best of Japanese and Mexican cuisine collide, you get a sushi-burrito mash-up that makes the taste buds sing. The brainchild of Peter Yen, the Sushirrito is currently only available in California but will be up for grabs for New Yorkers from this week. We’re hoping and praying an Aussie branch will be opened soon. Pretty please.
A food blogger has taken the next logical step in food mash-ups, creating doughnuts made from instant ramen noodles. It took 12 hours to create the ramnut, which in Culinary Brodown’s words are starchy, crispy, “covered in frosting and stuffed with custard”.
Doritos Crunchy Crust Pizza
If you like corn chips and you like pizza, you’re pretty much guaranteed to love this. Launched by Pizza Hut, the pizza has mozzarella cheese in the crust, layered with Doritos. Oh, and of course, that’s all sprinkled with even more cheese. Best eaten when you have a hangover.

A cafe in LA, Alfred Coffee & Kitchen, has started to sell a chocolate-dipped waffle cone coffee cup. It’s called the Alfred Cone. And we want one.
“You’ll liked it, so we’ll make it” so reads Boston Pizza’s website when describing its pizza cake concept. Although there has been no firm date on the release of this savoury cake, no doubt when it is launched in Canada, other crazy pizza makers will follow suit. Let’s just hope it comes free with a heart attack warning.
